Eligibility for the surgery
The medical requirements are the same for the sleeve gastrectomy and for the gastric bypass. The surgical treatment of obesity is intended for individuals who were not able to lose weight by other means and:
- whose BMI is greater than 40kg/m2 of the body weight; or
- whose BMI is between 35 and 40kg/m2 and who have diabetes, hypertension, diseases of heart, joints or the sleep apnea.
The type of surgery is chosen by the patient after a previous recommendation by the surgeon.

Before the surgery some auxiliary tests, which sometimes indicate the need for additional preparation of the patient, must be carried out. They include:
- Laboratory tests – evaluation of blood count, concentration of iron, vitamin B12, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, foil acid
- Gastroscopy witha test detecting the infection ofpylorihelicobacter
- Ultrasound of the abdominal cavity
- Ultrasound of the lower limbs using the Dopler method
- Spirometry
- EKG
- RTG of the chest
- Consulation with an anaesthiologist

Preparation for the surgery
The patients who decide to undergo the surgical treatment of obesity should bear in mind that after the procedure the amount of the consumed food will be significantly limited. Initially, it will only include liquids. For that reason, in the period of 2 to 4 weeks before the procedure we recommend the decrease of the consumed kilocalories during the day to 1000-1500. It is important for the patients to change their attitude towards eating before the surgery.
