After the surgery
Bariatric surgeries performed by the team of the EurObesityClinic usually last from one to two hours. After that time the patients are recovered from the general anaesthesia and remain under the care of medical personnel 24 hours a day.
We encourage the patients to walk as soon as after two hours following the procedure. Immediate movement and regular tensing of calf muscles (rapid upward and downward movement of the foot– 50 repetitions every half an hour) decrease the risk clot formation. The patient can also sip small amounts of liquid even after a few hours from the surgery. The next day a liquid diet, which substitutes drips, is introduced. We orally administer antiulcerative medications and analgesics, regularly monitoring the patient’s condition.
For the sake of the comfort of the operated person, he/she may stay in the hospital even up to three days after the surgery. In the later period it is necessary to follow dietary instructions, supplement vitamins and minerals, gradual increase the physical activity, undergo the ordered tests and have consultations periodically. The process of wound healing is evaluated a week after the surgery. Depending on the patient’s release day, he/she is examined one more time before leaving. It is recommended to have further tests and consultations after 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months from the procedure, then once a year.
At the moment, the effectiveness of the surgical treatment of obesity is 80%. It is, however, important to remember that the surgery is only auxiliary means to fight the obesity and it should not be treated as a procedure which once and for all will combat the disease. Both the sleeve gastrectomy and the gastric bypass are the first step towards the new healthy lifestyle. It is as if the patient is born again and learns from the scratch what, how much, when and how to eat, and how to spend time to achieve the desired success.
Check the dietary instructions.
Check the schedule for follow-up appointments and consultations.
